Decarbonisation basics. I’ve recently been delivering some training on decarbonisation in buildings as part of the delivery of our global strategy. I like to start with the basic components of decarbonisation, I also find it useful to remind myself what the big picture is. 13.5Gt CO2 / year associated with buildings, of which:- 10Gt are as a result of energy use and- 3.5Gt are linked to the materials we use. It is all too easy to get lost focusing in on one particular idea without keeping some perspective, and some of these ideas can be a wasteful distraction! The key message here is that whilst lower carbon materials will get us some of the way to decarbonisation, they only represent one part of the solution. In the recently published SBTi draft guidance on the Buildings pathway the difference between the rate of decarbonisation in our most common construction materials and the rate that we need to achieve in buildings is highlighted. You can read that here 👇 https://lnkd.in/epxFCu9JIn summary, we need to achieve double the rate of decarbonisation in buildings compared to the decarbonisation of materials and that is assuming that conventional materials decarbonise at a steep rate! The good news is that we can do this! There are plenty of opportunities to reduce material intensity as well as energy demand. It does mean that we need to focus on designing differently, finding ways to reduce the quantity of new materials we use as well as unlocking the potential to use alternative lower carbon materials. I'm working on the third and perhaps fourth levels of this diagram, unpacking the individual actions which need to be taken and mapping out how much they should contribute to the decarbonisation landscape.Have you started to design differently yet? If not, why not?#letsclosethegap #decarbonisation

Warning! Do not unsee this terrifying chart, courtesy of HGA. Your legal and ethical obligations as a building practitioner are on the line. The wildly fluctuating scribbles are our climate future. The dotted red line is the weather data you're probably using to design critical building functions like:🔥 Heating & cooling💡 Lighting & shading💦 Moisture management🌬 Ventilation🛁 PlumbingSo ... what to do? Candace Pearson has the deets on how to use the right tools to design for future weather. https://lnkd.in/eVUexaxTKim Shinn, PE, LEED Fellow, BEMP National Renewable Energy Laboratory Victor Braciszewski, PE Nathan Kegel Arup ASHRAE The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

Our buildings were designed for a climate that no longer exists. This is a terrific diagram on the problem with #energycodes by HGA.Our energy codes are based on *historic* #weather data - that is, data from the past. They do not account for current warming climates, and they certainly don't account for future volatility from Climate Zone Migration - including crazier peaks from heat domes and cold snaps due to #climatechange. This not only has massive implications for life safety and #publichealth, but liability as well. This is the very subject I'll be speaking about at The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference in June, with Monte Paulsen. Hope you'll be tuning in. #architecture #buildingscience #climateadaptation #qualityoflife

Berkeley Lab and The Brattle Group have a nice new contribution to the building decarbonization literature, highlighting U.S. Building Sector Decarbonization Scenarios to 2050. The study reinforces some key pillars (efficiency + electrification are critical; early retrofits and codes and standards are key levers) and provides a deep dive into impacts across regions, building types, end uses, and measure types. Did you know that the carbon associated with the production of building materials, construction activities, operations & end of life account for 28% of all carbon emissions re: buildings? That's why the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is helping higher education institutions, community colleges and trade schools create Building Training Assessment Centers (BTACs) to prepare a workforce ready to equip buildings with modern technology to lower their carbon footprint. My research interests focus on calculating and reducing the embodied carbon emissions from building retrofits. Specifically, I will analyze the carbon payback period - how long it takes for operational carbon reductions to offset the embodied carbon of retrofitting. My key research questions are:How much embodied carbon do different retrofit strategies add versus operational carbon reduction? What are the most effective options for minimizing embodied carbon in retrofits? How can we optimize retrofit decisions based on carbon payback period? While new construction is well-studied, existing building retrofit emissions are often overlooked, even post-2050. Through case studies and carbon modeling, I will address the full carbon impact of retrofits. This includes embodied carbon, operational savings, payback periods, and costs. The analysis will account for buildings' physical properties, retrofit depth, and functionality constraints. I'll assess quick win opportunities like lighting and control upgrades as well as material strategies like low carbon and bio-based options.A key challenge is limited environmental data on retrofit options. However, combining energy modeling with life cycle assessment can clarify carbon payback periods to inform reduction strategies. My goal is to provide practical, cost-effective renovation solutions to work towards near-zero energy in existing buildings. This research highlights the urgent need for stronger retrofitting regulations to meet construction's decarbonization targets.#carbonpayback #embodiedcarbon #oneclicklca
