Favorite Pumpkin Recipes

Fall is finally here, which means I’m craving ALL the apple desserts, soup recipesand delicious pumpkin recipes. I am obsessed with all of the warm fall flavors and get in the baking mood as soon as the cooler weather hits. I just love this time of year!

Pumpkin.Yum. There is something so ridiculously delicious and comforting about the taste of pumpkin in the fall and I’ve honestly been waiting not-so-patiently for the moment when I wouldn’t get the crazy look from my husband for starting to use pumpkin in my baking.

Well, ladies and gents, the time has come and to fuel my fall baking, I’ve rounded up this amazing list of my favorite pumpkin recipes that are easy, delicious and full of pumpkin flavor. Most of these are pumpkin desserts, because let’s be honest, aren’t they just the best?! But you can’t forget breakfast and savory pumpkin recipes too!

Pumpkin Puree vs. Pumpkin Pie Filling

As you glance through pumpkin recipes you may see a variety of ways that pumpkin as an ingredient is listed! Here is the difference between raw pumpkin, canned pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie filling.

  • Raw pumpkin. This is fresh pumpkin squash! Most recipes won’t call for this as it is easier to work with pumpkin puree.
  • Pumpkin puree. This refers to cooked pumpkin that is cooked and pureed. You can make your own pumpkin puree or buy it canned in the baking aisle. Unflavored pumpkin puree is most often called for in pumpkin recipes.
  • Pumpkin pie filling. This is sweetened pumpkin puree that also includes pumpkin spices. Read labels when shopping so you don’t accidentally pick up pumpkin pie filling when you need plain pumpkin puree!

    FAQs

What are the best pumpkins for pureeing? ›

For cooking, you'll want to use sugar pumpkins (also called pie or sweet pumpkins), which are small and round. Long Island Cheese pumpkins, which are more oblong and can look like a wheel of cheese, are also good to eat. Field pumpkin types are larger, have watery, stringy flesh, and are best for decorating.

Can you eat the stringy part of pumpkins? ›

Yes, you can use that stringy slimy stuff in the middle of the pumpkin: put it in a pan with plenty of water, and boil it to make a thin broth. Strain the broth, then mix it with apple or orange juice and mulling spices for an aromatic autumnal warmer.

Is canned pumpkin the same as pumpkin puree? ›

Canned pumpkin and pumpkin puree are the same thing, and you'll often see the terms used interchangeably in recipes and cookbooks. Unlike pumpkin pie mix, canned pumpkin does not have any spices, sugars, or other additives. In many cases, the only ingredient is pumpkin.

What is the best pumpkin to cook with? ›

The Sugar Pie Pumpkin is often considered the crème de la crème of cooking pumpkins. Its deep orange flesh is sweet, smooth, and creamy, making it perfect for pies, soups, and purees. This culinary gem pairs beautifully with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, creating irresistible autumnal flavors.

Is it worth it to make pumpkin puree? ›

I'd never been a big fan of pumpkin pie until then, but there was just something about the texture and flavor that convinced me that making my own pumpkin puree was worth the extra effort—and as it turns out, it isn't much effort at all. I've been pureeing my own pumpkin ever since.

Does homemade pumpkin puree taste better than canned? ›

Based on my taste tests, I think that fresh puree would easily elevate any savory pumpkin dish such as soup or pasta. The fresh, unadulterated flavor and fluffy texture would work wonderfully in savory dishes, especially because even “sugar pumpkins” aren't very sweet on their own.

What part of the pumpkin is not edible? ›

Spoiler alert – it's a trick question! The correct answer is that ALL parts of the pumpkin are edible (although you wouldn't want to eat the dried stem – yuck!). Pumpkins are in the squash family, called “Cucurbits,” and all parts of all squash are edible – leaves, vines, fruit, seeds, skin and roots!

Are there any pumpkins you can't eat? ›

While all pumpkins are edible, some are great as food, and some are better suited for other purposes. The jack-o'-lantern pumpkin is a great example.

    Can dogs have pumpkin? ›

Pumpkin is a delicious addition to a human diet, but it also has a number of health benefits for your dog. Mineral and vitamin-packed. Pumpkin contains vitamins like A, C, and E, as well as minerals like iron and potassium. Feeding plain canned pumpkin gives a great boost to your dog's nutrition.

Is Libby's 100 pure pumpkin the same as pumpkin puree? ›

Pumpkin puree can be labeled as 100% pure pumpkin, pumpkin puree, solid pack pumpkin, or simply "pumpkin." Regardless of what it's called, one thing pumpkin puree won't contain is any sort of seasonings or sugar—it's just cooked and mashed squash.

What happens if you use pumpkin pie mix instead of pumpkin puree? ›

You can only use pumpkin pie mix in place of pure pumpkin in some cases. If you are making a pumpkin pie, the canned filling can be used in place of the puree, sugar, spices, and thickeners. You would want to adjust the recipe for the extra ingredients in the filling.

How to make pumpkin puree taste better? ›

For even more flavor, you can add spices (like the celebrated pumpkin pie spice!) to the purée during the cooking step. Heating spices “blooms” them, releasing their flavorful, fragrant oils.

    What pairs with pumpkin? ›

To complement pumpkin with sweet flavor pairings, consider using spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and vanilla, or sweet ingredients like chocolate, maple, honey, cranberries or brown sugar. Create savory dishes by pairing pumpkin with spices like chilies, cajun, cayenne or pepper.

How many cups is a 15 oz can of pumpkin? ›

How Many Cups in a Can of Pumpkin, Really? Fifteen ounces of canned pumpkin is just shy of 2 cups (16 ounces would be 2 cups). By comparison, a 3-pound pie pumpkin will likely give you enough puree for a recipe that calls for a can of pumpkin.

Are large pumpkins good for puree? ›

larger pumpkins can have less puree if they are hollow. Some small pumpkin varieties have more flesh. A large Halloween pumpkin, intended for carving, usually has only 2 inches of flesh. Still, it yields a great deal of goodness.

Can you use jack o lantern pumpkins for puree? ›

Puree this roasted flesh in a food processor or blender and you have pumpkin essence which serves as a base for dozens of amazing fall recipes. The puree can be used to make pumpkin bread muffins pancakes and waffles.

Are carving pumpkins good for puree? ›

Best Pumpkins to Use for Pumpkin Puree

For this recipe I used “pie pumpkins”. Pie pumpkins, also known as “sugar pumpkins” or “sweet pumpkins”, are smaller and sweeter than your typical carving pumpkin.

What is the difference between whole pumpkin and pumpkin puree? ›

Pumpkin puree is also simply pumpkin, nothing else. Some stores use the term pumpkin puree but this just means it's better for baking. Pumpkin puree saves you time when you want to bake, so you don't have to scoop your own pumpkin.
