This recipe for vegan celeriac steaks was one of the first vegetarian options I ever tried. Yes, back then it was vegetarian and non-gluten-free; coated in beaten eggs and covered with breadcrumbs. It comes directly from my grandmother’s youth. This was almost what she ate every day throughout her nursing school days. Back then she ate celeriac because it was so inexpensive – little did she know that she actually invented a recipe that became a family favorite.

My version of celeriac steaks is more like a homage to my grandma’s original recipe. I have added a few twists, and most importantly, I have made it into an all-vegan steak recipe as well as a gluten-free one.

I honestly can’t tell you how good these vegan steaks are. Imagine how the golden and crispy outside gives way to the soft and delicious inside. It’s packed with flavors and gets a little bit of heat from the chili.

Vegan Celeriac recipes

I think celeriac is really an underrated vegetable. They are firm and easy to cook and have a fresh and sweet taste at the same time. If you want to, you can put these on the barbecue, and you will get an amazing result each time. Grilling celeriac brings out the natural sweetness and starts caramelizing the natural sugars – Yum. This is a great vegan barbecue option (and I’m always looking for those).

These vegan steaks are pretty much great with everything. Try pairing them with sweet potato fries and guacamole, or bring out the sweetness even more with a fresh fruit salsa. The options are endless.

What I love about this celeriac steaks recipe:

  • Super simple to make
  • Packed with flavors and deliciously crunchy on the outside
  • Can be cooked on the stove or barbecued
  • Goes well with everything

Key ingredients for making easy vegan Celeriac steaks

  • 1 Celeriac Peeled –You can get celeriac root at most grocery stores
  • ½ cup Almond Milk – I prefer using almond milk as the binder that makes the flour stick to the beef celery, but you can also use cashew milk, soy milk, oat milk, rice milk, coconut milk, or your favorite non-dairy milk. Alternatively, yogurt can also work as a binder if you’re all out of plant milk.
  • 4 tbsp Almond Flour – I use medium-fine almond flour to get that extra crunchy golden crust on the celery steaks that are irresistibly good. It can be found at most well-stocked grocery stores or health food stores. You can also substitute with gluten-free bread crumbs or oat flour and coconut flakes if you need a nut-free steak crust. Other gluten-free flour types that can work well as a crust are oat flour and coconut flour. More delicious vegan crust options include crushed nuts like pistachios, cashews, seeds like sesame seeds or crushed sunflower seeds,
  • 1 bunch Fresh Parsley Chopped – my traditional celeriac steaks recipe uses parsley just like my grandma used to make them…but other tasty fresh herbs that I also love to use include fresh basil, fresh cilantro, oregano, and for a hint of freshness I sometimes add fresh mint leaves.
  • Seasoning – Pinch of dried Chili, Pinch of Salt. The basic grilled celery steaks recipe uses only salt and a pinch of chili pepper or black pepper. When I want a Herby Mediterranean flavor I add a couple of teaspoons herb de Provence or Italian spice mix to boost the flavor extra.
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil For Cooking – extra virgin olive oil is my favorite way to fry these golden celeriac root steaks. You can also substitute the olive oil with vegetable oil of your choice like sesame oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil which all have a high smoke point. Or make your celery root steaks extra luxurious and buttery by frying them in vegan butter or vegan garlic butter. Yum!

So how is this Easy Celeriac Steaks Recipe made? Just follow these simple steps and you’ll know how to cook Celeriac Steaks in no time:

Here are three gluten-free flour types that work well for crusts:

  1. Almond flour: Almond flour is a popular gluten-free flour that works well for crusts. It has a nutty flavor and a slightly grainy texture that makes it ideal for pie crusts, tart crusts, and crusts for cheesecakes.
  2. Rice flour: Rice flour is another gluten-free flour that works well for crusts. It has a mild flavor and a fine texture that makes it perfect for pie crusts, pizza crusts, and shortbread crusts.
  3. Coconut flour: Coconut flour is a gluten-free flour that works well for crusts as it has a subtle coconut flavor and a fine texture. It is a great option for pie crusts, tart crusts, and cheesecake crusts…and for coating all Celeriac steak sides to make a golden, crunchy crust.
