Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, expressed frustration over the lack of overtaking at the Lusail circuit, comparing it to the challenging yet thrilling high-speed tracks drivers adore. The issue, he argued, was not a new one, and he questioned the FIA's inaction, suggesting simple tweaks could have made a significant difference.
"I asked them, 'Why not increase the DRS zone?' Last year, we saw the same problem." Hamilton's words echo a sentiment shared by many, including fellow drivers like George Russell and Carlos Sainz.
Russell, a Mercedes driver, described the track as an "amazing" driving experience but emphasized the difficulty of overtaking due to the short DRS zone and fast first corner. Sainz, who finished on the podium, proposed reprofiling the final and first corners to create more overtaking opportunities.
"Everyone wants better racing in Qatar, and Qatar wants to deliver." Sainz's words hint at a mutual desire for improvement.
However, the FIA's lack of immediate action suggests that changes to the circuit are unlikely in the short term, especially with the potential for a completely different racing spectacle in 2026 with new car regulations.
But here's where it gets controversial: MotoGP, which races at Lusail, experiences entirely different dynamics. The circuit, designed by bikers for bike racing, offers exciting racing and last-lap deciders, a stark contrast to F1's struggles.
