Get ready to have your deepest desires twisted into your worst nightmares! Curry Barker's romance-infused horror film, Obsession, is already generating serious buzz, and now, with the backing of Jason Blum's Blumhouse, it's poised to be a major hit.
Focus Features has just dropped the first teaser for Obsession, a film that's been making waves since its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The film's premise? Michael Johnston plays a hopeless romantic who, in his quest to win over his crush, makes a wish on the mysterious "One Wish Willow." But be careful what you wish for... because in this case, the price of getting what you want is far more sinister than he could have ever imagined.
And this is the part most people miss... Barker, who wrote and directed the film, has crafted a story that delves into the dark side of desire, exploring how far we'll go for love and the terrifying consequences that can arise.
Obsession has already garnered critical acclaim, premiering in the midnight section at TIFF and going on to win the People's Choice Award at Sitges. It's slated to hit U.S. theaters on May 15, 2026.
The cast also includes Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. James Harris produced through Teashop Productions, along with Haley Nicole Johnson through Under the Shell, and Christian Mercuri on behalf of Capstone Pictures, which fully financed the project.
But here's where it gets controversial... The film currently boasts a stellar 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a testament to the film's quality and the anticipation surrounding its release.
Focus Features, known for distributing critically acclaimed films, including the psychological drama Anemone and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, is behind the distribution. They have several upcoming releases, including The History of Sound on December 18 and Song Sung Blue on Christmas Day.
Blumhouse, fresh off merging with Atomic Monster, has a packed schedule for 2026, including Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, Mortal Kombat 2, Jacob Chase’s Insidious, and Rob Savage’s Other Mommy, in addition to Obsession. Barker is also teaming up with Blumhouse and Spooky Pictures for his next project, Anything But Ghosts, which he'll direct from a script co-written with and starring Cooper Tomlinson.
