No added sugar fig Jam

This homemade sugar free fig jam recipe is made with five healthy and simple ingredients. Fresh figs, water, lemon juice, lemon zest and vanilla extract. Simmer the ingredients together and this delicious and healthy fig jam recipe will last for up to a week in the fridge, or up to a month in the freezer. You can use an approved canning method to preserve it for a longer period of time.

During the summer months figs are usually plentiful and bursting with flavor. This jam is unique because it doesn't require added sugar. I like to prepare fig jam when my figs have a very high natural sugar content. In other words they are very ripe and fresh. This recipe is a great way to preserve your summer fig harvest and enjoy delicious sweet and flavorful figs for months to come without any added sugar!

This healthy recipe can be enjoyed with fresh brie cheese, honey, crackers, even on toast or scones. This healthy recipe is so simple with only four ingredients and so versatile. You won't need pectin in this recipe either. By leaving the fig skin on you will be using the naturally occurring pectin in the figs. This not only allows for a simpler recipe it creates a more nutrient dense jam, and you won't even notice that the skins were left on once you try the finished product!

What type of figs should you use for fig jam?

I prefer black mission figs for this recipe, however brown turkey are another good option. You could also try Kadota or Calimyrna figs. Do note that different varieties of fig have varying natural sugar content so you may end up with a sweeter or less sweet finished product.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. fresh ripe figs, washed and quartered (with the skin on)
  • ¼ cup of water
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tsp. lemon zest
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Sugar free fig jam instructions

  1. combine figs water and lemon zest in large saucepan.
  2. simmer ingredients over medium low heat stirring constantly.
  3. when mixture becomes thick and sticky add lemon juice. cover and simmer over low heat for one hour, stirring occasionally.
  4. uncover and add vanilla extract.
  5. blend all ingreddients lightly with an emersion blender. do not over blend. By blending the ingredients you eliminate any skin remnants also.
  6. Let all ingredients simmer for fifteen minutes.
  7. remove from heat and allow to cool.
  8. fill prefered containers with jam.
  9. For canning use an approved canning method and follow canning instructions.

Yield: 6 medium sized jam jars

I like mission figs for this recipe but brown turkey is also a great option. I havn't tried using the kadota fig in this recipe, but it may be a good option with a sweeter outcome.
